Periodontics

Periodontics is a specialty of dentistry where dentists detect, diagnose, treat and prevent diseases that affect gums and other tissues supporting the teeth. At our dental clinic in Île-Perrot, we are pleased to count among us general dentists who are qualified in periodontics.

We call periodontium the tissues supporting our teeth and in which tooth roots are fixed. Of course, these include the gums, but also the alveolar bone, dental ligaments and cement. To wear a healthy smile, it is essential that all these tissues be in top condition. With state-of-the-art tools and more than 20 years of experience in dentistry, our dental care team offers specific care in periodontics.

Whether because of lifestyle or inadequate oral hygiene practises, growth of bacteria and plaque and tartar buildup can cause gum inflammation: this is called gingivitis. If nothing is done to limit gingivitis, inflammation is likely to spread to other tissues supporting the teeth, which will then result in periodontitis. If periodontitis is left untreated, it can cause degradation of the alveolar bone where the teeth are fixed. Over time, the teeth will become loose and may even fall permanently. The missing tooth or teeth will then need to be replaced, hence the importance of preventing these diseases with proper periodontal care.
