Gingivectomy
To improve a smile’s appearance or to promote optimal oral health, a gingivectomy may be a solution. With more than 20 years of experience, our general dentists can perform this periodontal procedure.
Do you feel your gums are too apparent when you smile? It is the case with some individuals who have excess gum tissue that covers parts of teeth that would otherwise be visible. This gives an impression of shorter teeth and the gums are more apparent. Fortunately, with specialized tools, your dentist will remove excess gum to give your smile a more uniform appearance. This procedure is called “gingivectomy,” i.e. removal of excess gum.
Gingivectomy helps, of course, to improve the aesthetics of the smile. Nevertheless, it can also be a preventive measure. Indeed, for some people, excess gum tissue causes difficulties during daily brushing and flossing. For this reason, these clients are more likely to develop oral diseases, such as cavities, gingivitis or periodontitis. In such a situation, the dentist may recommend he performs a gingivectomy to optimize his client’s oral health.
Laser Gingivectomy
At Centre Dentaire Don Quichotte, we offer our clients a gingivectomy using a laser device. In periodontics, laser devices are highly advantageous because the dentist can then remove only the targeted tissues. In addition, the laser significantly reduces bleeding and helps scarring of the tissues following the procedure. Using a laser allows us to perform painless procedures!
With a laser device, the gingivectomy procedure is fairly simple. First, your dentist will carry out a thorough cleaning of your teeth to remove bacteria, dental plaque and tartar. Next, he will define with you the desired look for your smile following the procedure. He will then remove excess tissue using the laser device. After the procedure, he will offer you advice to help scarring of the gums.
Cosmetic Gingivectomy
In most cases, gingivectomy is prescribed for aesthetic reasons. If you feel your gums are too apparent when you smile, come meet us and we will tell you if this procedure can help you have a smile you will be proud to show!
Gingivectomy: Promoting Oral Health
As we mentioned, a gingivectomy also promotes oral health by making daily teeth brushing and flossing easier. It is also a procedure that can be recommended after a periodontal disease, i.e. when the gum has detached from the tooth root and it is more vulnerable to accumulations of bacteria and food residues.
